Mermaid’s Chair / Sandy Bay Beach

These beaches are situated within the gated community of Botany Bay, but all beaches in the area are public, so everyone must be granted access. However, reaching these beaches requires good physical condition. Non-residents must park outside the gates and walk down, unless they catch one of the shuttles. The walk to the beach is downhill and manageable, but the return trip is quite strenuous, as it’s entirely uphill with no plateaus and very little shade. If you choose to walk, and it is worth it, ensure you wear SPF, bring a hat, good walking shoes, rash guards, and more water than you think you’ll need. Trust me on this.

Alternatively, you can take a shuttle, with two trips down at 8 am and 12:30 pm, and one return trip at 4 pm. You need to be picked up at the same spot where you were dropped off. Be punctual for the 4 pm shuttle, or you’ll have to walk back up.

These beaches are breathtaking and worth the effort. Mermaid’s Chair is the only place in St. Thomas where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean are separated by a narrow strip of land. It’s advisable to do some online research beforehand to see what others recommend, as there’s plenty of information available. Sandy Beach is equally beautiful and much sandier than Mermaid’s Chair. It’s perfect for those seeking an active adventure and a beach off the beaten path.

If you take a taxi to Botany Bay, arrange a pickup time with the driver as cell service is almost non-existent. Even better, book a personal driver for your vacation to avoid traffic worries.
